IPSEA - Independent Provider of Special Education Advice
IPSEA (ipsea.org.uk) is the UK's oldest and largest SEND advice charity. They offer free legal advice to parents of children with SEND. IPSEA can help with: understanding your rights, drafting letters and appeals, preparing for Tribunal, and challenging local authority decisions. You can call their phone line, email, or use their online chat. Their advice is provided by legally trained advisers and is genuinely expert. If you're in a dispute with your local authority, IPSEA is your first call.
SOS!SEN - Special Educational Needs
SOS!SEN (sossen.org.uk) is another major SEND support charity. They offer advice, support, training, and advocacy for parents. They can help you understand the EHCP process, gather evidence, draft letters, and prepare for Tribunal. SOS!SEN also produces excellent guides and resources about SEND law and processes. They have local groups in many areas where you can connect with other parents going through similar situations.
CDC - Contact a Family (now Centre for Disabled Children)
CDC (now at centrefordsiabledchildren.org - previously Contact a Family) offers support and signposting for families with disabled children. They can help you find local services, connect with other families, and access information about SEND support. They also provide some legal advice and signposting. CDC is particularly helpful if your child has a rare condition or multiple needs.
SNJ - Special Needs Jungle
Special Needs Jungle (specialneedsjungle.com) is a free online resource for SEND parents run entirely by volunteers. It has guides, templates, and information about SEND law and processes. The Facebook community is very active and supportive. While SNJ advisers are not legally trained like IPSEA, the community can offer practical support and experience.
How to access these services
Most of these charities are free - that's the point. IPSEA offers free legal advice to anyone - you don't have to be a member or pay anything. SOS!SEN offers free advice and support. CDC offers free support. Contact them directly - their phone lines and email are on their websites. Be clear about what you need help with. If you're in a complex case (like an appeal or Tribunal), IPSEA is your best bet. If you need emotional support and peer connection, SOS!SEN and the SNJ community are invaluable.
